As there appears to be sevearal people around here who have an interest in Modern and contemporary architecture, I thought it would be great to have an official thread where we could post pictures of buildings and projects we like and discuss them

it's nice, very well designed and modern, but in my opinion it's a little bit too cold to be a residential unit, would be perfect for an office tho.

here is a pretty innovative building in san francisco:

it is said to be the most environmental friendly building in the world.



Buildings used to be designed with the climate in mind with big opening windows to the exterior; shading and bris de soliel to the south; shallow working areas to maximize exposure to natural light. Mix the desire to build a green, efficient building with post 9/11 security and you have Thom Mayne's new San Francisco Federal Building.

I like the soap bar compartment by the sink. Hmmm lots of visible concrete, must have been constructed during the late 60 or during the 70s right?

I have to admit that i am well into Architecture. Being a civil engineer means that you also may need to design a house by your self. Me and dad "specialise" in building villas and our office also has a architect who only designs the exterior/interior of the houses.

I have not designed a real house myself yet, but i have did several attempts and i am practising a lot in autocad. So far, my father has full responsibilities but soon i am gonna take over fully

So, i am interested!

It is a recent building Hassan. But you are not wrong with your perceptions ....it definately has a 60s/70s Brutalist aspect to it. This kind of Retro-Modernism has been a popular trend for about a decade now. In the mid 1990s there was a big revival of interest in mid-Twentieth Century architecture and design. Fashion designer Tom Ford (former Gucci designer) was a big influence on the 1990s fashion for mid-twentieth century Modern architecture and interior design -- Wallpaper* magazine also played a big part in this. It seemed you couldn't walk 10 metres in the 1990s without bumping into a Charles Eames or Arne Jacobsen chair. Even the music videos were full of white interiors with Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona chairs (probably the most famous chair of the 20th century and although it was designed in 1929 it became particularly popular in the 1950s).

Tadao Ando is one of my favourite architects. He is a Japanese architect and has no formal training ...but some regard him as the world's greatest living architect. He uses lots of raw concrete, yet his buildings don't seem cold or inhuman.

tadao ando is also one of my favorite architect, i believe he was among the first to use raw concrete as a design element? i especially like his church of the light.

here is another interesting building in san francisco, The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption:



notice that the roof is shaped as a cross
