It is important to separate art from the art market ....they are two very different things. Having said that, the line dividing them has become more blurred in recent years (although one could suggest Picasso, Warhol, and others, were made superstars as much by the market as through their brilliance) some contemporary artists have risen to fame more for their notoriety and shock value ....and the market has played into that as well. | |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Artists & Paintings I will continue with my theme of Revolutionary art. El Lissitzky was a contemporary of Malevich's. Lazar Markovich Lissitzky (El Lissitzky) (1890-1941) His early work was influenced by the Italian Futurists and their love of speed and machines. 1913-1916 ![]() He became very influenced by Malevich's Suprematism and Vladimir Tatlin's Constructivism. El Lissitsky became a major propaganda artist for the Bolsheviks. His pictures used symbolism to make their point ...as many people who were to see them were illiterate. His designs were visions of a new world, a modern Russia (and Soviet Union), trains were painted with his designs and traveled throughout the Soviet Union with their celebratory message of the achievements of the revolution. From Wikipedia Some of his most famous works derive from this era, with perhaps his most famous being the 1919 propaganda poster "Beat the Whites with the Red wedge" (pictured below). Russia was going through a civil war at the time, which was mainly fought between the "Reds", who were the communists and revolutionaries, and the "Whites" who were the monarchists, conservatives, liberals and socialists who opposed the Bolshevik Revolution. ![]() Lissitzky developed his own variation of Suprematism he called Proun. These are some of the most exemplary and brilliant examples of early Modern graphic design IMO. Lissitzky's influence is obvious in the graphic design language taught at the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany. In 1921 he moved to Berlin after taking the job as a Russian cultural ambassador. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Artists & Paintings About 2 Squares About 2 squares is a childrens book by El Lissitsky published in 1922 by Skythen, Berlin. The text also forms the powerful imagery of the story. It is a brilliant example of abstract Modernism -- a story where the "characters" are idealized abstract concepts.
