Canon 40D

Well I did it and will have the 40D Friday PM. Just getting the Body since all my lenses from the 20D are compatible. Some nice new features I am anxious to try out. The 20D is on it's way to NY for an appraisal and I will probably just take a check for it and apply that to the 40D. Otherwise it will just sit and gather dust. Price on the 40D Body only is $1299 US.

Here's What's In The Box:

Test Image

This is shot # 0002 with the 40D and the EF-S 17-55mm IS lens, Aperture Priority, set on Standard Style. I wanted to see if there were any AF problems...apparently not..

Handheld at 1/13, f/5.0, ISO 800, no flash, jpg Large File. Cropped slightly and tweaked with CS3. Today I will try and shoot some real pics.

Big improvements over the 20D. Grip is one that is obvious from the start, very comfortable and hand fits really well. Shutter noise has been calmed down and much quieter. Menus have been completely revised and much easier to make adjustments.

Re: Canon 40D

Congratulations. From what I have seen it is a good camera.

The picture above was shot in roaw, jpeg fine, what? There is some fuzziness there and I think it may be due to the F-stop setting of 2.8?

Very nice indeed Jack. Congratulations.

Re: Canon 40D

Thanks Michael. This was jpg and at Large (finest). Adobe and others have not yet added support for this camera so RAW is only available if you use Canon's software which I don't load. So I will have to shoot jpg until Adobe moves on it.

It was f/5.0 but if you see fuzziness it is from the image size reduction or the DOF being a little shallow. The noise level in the original at 800 ISO is really hardly noticeable.

Here is a shot of it with the 17-55 attached:

Sweet!

I just got my Nikon D40 two weeks ago and I can't stop taking pictures with it. It's fun snapping shots with DSLR's!

Auto Focus

I am really impressed with the speed and accuracy of the AF on the 40D. It has been perfect on the EF-S 17-55mm lens and today I tried it on the EF-70-300mm lens. This shot was in the middle of a Burst of 6 shots of a moving vehicle. EXIF: ISO 1600, F/10, 1/1000, Shutter Priority, jpg Large, 300mm. Tweaked in PS and resized.

The AF is very quick...much faster than on my 20D. Noise level at 1600 was not a factor when I processed the image in CS3.

Here is a 100% crop from the original jpg:

For checking the AF, you may try to use a ruler, focus to a point and take a photo with an angle and the Aperture set to as low value as possible (like the attached photo), then it can easily tell is any back focus or other focus matters

:> ...... I think i will get a 40D a month later,

Re: Test Image

Very nice Jack. Geez, that is a nice shot and the IQ of the image is great. I can't wait to see what the D300 can do. No pictures as of yet, so I am wondering.
