ok, we have a digital camera at the moment, a canon ixus whatever.
But believe it or not, I want something bigger and better. And the driving force behind it, is my girlfriend seriously, she badly wants me to buy a DSLR, isn't she amazing

But, and this is my problem here, although I've always liked photography and I've always wanted a DSLR, I know shit about them.

So I'm depending on you to give me some help, advice, tips.
I don't want the best of the best, not going to spend €1000 here.
But I don't want crap either.
I want a decent DSLR, good value for money, not too complicated, but with most of the gadgets one might use. A DSLR which basically, you can't go wrong with, but without having to sell my kidney's or go through a 3 year class to understand it.

I bought a Nikon D60 myself in January!! Absolutely love this camera!! It has all functions you need - especially when you are at the beginning of taking photos with a DSLR!! The Canon EOS450D is also very nice…both costs between €400 and €600!
Especially if you don't want to spend more on a camera, these two should be perfect for you…would go to a "dealer" and check both cameras out - which lies more comfortable in your hand etc!

thx for the tip. I went to a store to get me some info today. I saw the D60 yesterday and it is priced rather competitively but the store gave me the advice to look at what I want to do. The D60 might quickly be too "starter DSLR" if I get to know the device any better. That's the plan, I really want to try getting into it.

So basically they said, go a bit higher up, that will give you room to grow. I'm seriously considering the D 5000. PQ-wise it's almostidentical to the D90, I really like that turnable screen and it's €300 less expensive than the D90.
I can get it with a 15-55 Lens AF-VR for arround €770 here. It's more than the D60, but you're getting a lot of camera and it seems to be more userfriendly than a comparable canon. What do you think?

Sounds like a good deal to me!!

The canon vs. nikon debate is like BMW vs. Mercedes! Both build great cars with nearly identical equipment! But some like Merc more and the other BMW! But you can't do wrong to buy one of these cars…

…the D5000 is the newest Nikon model - and probably the best for you here…especially some advantage over the D60 with life-view (which the D60 doesn't offer) etc! If this camera is in your budget, I wouldn't definitely go for it! For the lense - maybe you can get a 18-200mm! I had to discern that you come to limits, when you only have a 15(or18)-55mm! But probably you are out of your budget then!!

yeah, that would be a bit out of the budget. Also, I want to start with the stock lens, see how that goes and what I learn, I can always buy an extra lens afterwards
