Re: It's Official: Nikon D40

I was about to make a thread about whether I should buy this model as my first SLR camera. So what do you guys think?

Re: It's Official: Nikon D40

I don't know. I have not read to much into it, but I have to re think what Nikon is attempting to do here.

You will have a 3 area focus. I think if you want to try for DSLR you can get this one, D50 or the 350D.

What is your range $?

I would've expected this camera in the 499 for the kit, but I guess they pushed to 599.

I think Nikon is diversifying their line up so much, that it begs the question: What is Canon going to do?

That is quite cheap. I'd like to see some pics and test!

Looks like a very nice camera. Remember there is also the Pentax K110D which is $499, has that 11 point focus too, no shake reduction though.

You really won't need to. It is the same sensor as the D50 and the D70s. I saw pictures at Dpreview.com and they are astounding.

I recommend this camera for those of you who do not have the financial assets and would like something to start with. It gives you a visual cue of the aperture, which I have never seen, and seems to guide you through the process.

You are absolutely right. I am not a Pentax guy so I cannot comment on them. I know, however, that they have great products.

To be honest with you, all the gadgets that have been introduced really are marketting skeems to try to get those people that don't really know about DSLR to go with them. Take a look at the 400D (Canon) and A100 (Sony). They have these unique features that are meant to sell the camera more than to maintain it IMO. The 400D has the sensor dust reducer and I have yet to read how effective it is. I guess months of test will have to be put in place in order for one of us to notice a difference. The vibration reduction, which is not yet in Nikons but can be found in some of their lenses and has made its way into Sony's first DSLR body, is a unique feature which once again I am not so intereted in. I bought the 18-200mm because of the range it gives me. Yes it is a plus that the camera has a vibration reduction, but if you look at the EOS 1D Mark II you will see that these features are not incorporated. These are features that come really at the end of the design of the camera if at all. Professional photographer make pictures while amatuers take them.

I haven't read anything on it so... However, that sounds great! D70 used to be my dream camera.

You can still get it for a decent price.

Re: It's Official: Nikon D40

So if we look at features which is better D40 or D50? 5 area focus is a plus for the D50 but what other differences are there? What about Olympus, is it worth considering?
