Windows Vista (SP1 and SP2) is far superior to Windows XP. Windows 7 is much like Windows Vista except lighter on resources, a more mature and user friendly user interface and superior mobility controls. Overall it takes Windows Vista, makes a lot of little changes that result in more stable, user friendlly and visually stunning operating system... I hated Windows XP, liked Windows Vista, but I truely enjoy using Windows 7 as it has made my day to day life easier in many different regards.

I've been using it since before the RC,it's the best OS out there as it won't start deleting all your data for no reason like other OS do ( I'm looking at you fruity )

I've been using Mac OSX for many years and its far better than Vista. Vista use a lot of computer storage and you need good memory to be compatible with Vista. Hopefully Windows 7 fix these issues.

I never liked XP that much. It's very messy in tetrms of ergonomics, and the blue "Luna" theme looks like it's designed for the 8-years olds only.

Vista's much easier to use (once the UAC has been deactivated), Aero looks good but some areas need improvement (no transparent top when full-scale) and it's still very rigid looking compared to Mac or Linux.

However, the trouble is it's so damn slow on anything weaker than NASA's supercomputer... I couldn't stand those interminable boot and shutdown times, this slow reactivity, this slow copy performances...
And I experienced a major issue too (Windows Explorer kept restarting, rendering the womputer useless)...

This is why I switched to Linux Ubuntu (hate Mac's expensive prices for everything, the has-to-buy-Mac only approach).

Ubuntu's fast, safe, Compiz-Fusion makes Aero look hundred years old and Mac OS-X like something of the past, even if the basic theme is not soo good-looking. And amzingly enough, it's the easiestOS to use imo. I felt very comfortable with it right from the start.

Furthermore, it recognized every single component and had every single driver in store, it worked flawlessly out-of-the-box. Sure, some things needs a bit of a tweak, but overall not more than Windows (where I plunged in the register base to shave off some useless protocols and functiosn in a desperate attempt to make things quicker).

Seven, from what I gathered, is a lightweight and touchscreen-friendly Vista. Like Vista how it always should've been...

I know this is off topic, but the removal of items from a guest accounts is the right thing to do; to say this is a flaw in a Mac is asinine or uninformed.... Microsoft has tried this for so long and never got it straight... basically in Windows you need to be an administrator and manually create a guest account with your own access permissions, literally, in order to accomplish a safe environment for a guest... and then completely disable the guest account already built in windows..... oh yes and careful on using the 'Administrator' account because that is also a threat to your data... at Enterprise level Windows Servers, our first order of business is to change it to something else, localadmin, su, yourname, etc, anything but 'Administrator'

In a Mac, or like on ANY Unix-based environment, you can always access the SuperUser account and make all the modifications needed, even remotely, to safely cater what you show on the guest account, what access they'll have, etc.

For the non-technical folks, the Mac guest account (like any Unix or Linux flavored OS) displays safely without risking your personal data.. You need to access the SuperUser (administrator) account in order to make changes, and yes even if you think your user account is 'the' administrator (can install software, delete, etc), there's yet another level above which is the 'real' super user for your Unix/Linux box (read: Mac in this case) and this superuser account is also hidden as to protect 'you' from wiping out your own data... but that's another topic and it's way OT from Andreas thread topic

No. I'm saying what it is about guest accounts in general.

I wasn't aware of that bug... that is new to me. /dev/null gone lose?

BTW, I use all kinds of OSs due to my work, not just Macs. You should know this by now...

AND, as a curiosity I tried to trigger that rare bug and could not reproduce it. Re-enabled the guest account, logged in and out and all the data was intact, all configurations exactly the same, nothing happened and everything worked normal.. so go figure.... just in case, don't try triggering any known bugs on any personal machines, unless you have to... I wonder of this is a bug that exists even from before snow leopard..

If you want to discuss OSX, go ahead and create a new thread to debate Snow Leopard, etc, if you want, but this thread is about Windows 7.

About Windows 7: So far, it is looking very promising; at least for what I need it to do. I'm liking it, no big issues yet . If you are planning on upgrading, I'd suggest a complete new installation, avoid the headaches of upgrading from Vista, and/or XP... not worth it. Assuming your hardware can handle W7, you will be better off installing fresh

I will be getting a new laptop soon, I think it's going to be an HP with W7 pre-installed. This will replace my old Dell D820 laptop (running XP) as the road warrior. I want it to be a tad smaller and lighter but still a business class laptop like the D820.
