Healthcare

With Healthcare debate dominating the news the past few months, its interesting to see no one is talking about it here.

So just to get things going, some popular questions/talking points...

Is Healthcare a right or a privilege?

Is it not the duty of a government to protect its citizens? Isnt adequate healthcare the first step in this?

Healthcare is a right, and where it isn't it should be.

I think there is a reason no one has posted anything here yet.

DMV, Postoffice, Medicare, Social Security, Caltrans (roadworks)... Wait why don't I want the government to run healthcare?
Massachusetts state run healthcare is bankrupt and that state has the longest wait times to see doctors

Constitiution lists things the Government can not do. Can not control the press, can not take away guns, can not control religions...
No where in the Constitution does it say the Government has to give the people healthcare.

Congress has been trying to "fix" healthcare for sixty years, why do the morons in power think they have to do it right now this second? Dems want to write up something and vote on it before anyone has a chance to read through it and they want to do this even though a vast majority of people don't want this. I think it is 85% against.
9/12 estimates differ 10,000 to over 2 million (compare pics from the inauguration and 9/12, looks like more on 9/12 to me) people marched on DC partly because they don't want government run healthcare.

Over 300 million people in the US and a month ago 46 million people had no insurance. Obama gave his speach to the joint house. 35 million have no insurance. Well the 11 million difference (illegal aliens). Of the 35 million 2/3s are between 18 and 34. A large percent of people in college or just out don't want to buy insurance (I don't need it I am young...) They don't have insurance because they don't want to buy it even if they can afford it.
So people that don't have insurance that want it and can't afford it is around 10 million. Why do we need to screw over 300 million to help 10 million?
I like the part in the health bill that states if you don't buy this government insurance than you will be fined $19,000? or spend time in jail. Great I can't afford to buy the insurance you are making me buy so I am not buying it and you hit me with a $19,000 fine, here is a check.

Remove restrictions to allow people to buy out of state insurance, this will allow for more competition and lower costs. Allow patents on medication to be extended for more than 4 years (other patents last 15) but only allow this as long as pharmaceutical companies lower the costs for medication. This should allow them to make the same profit just extend it over a longer period of time (less per pill). US pharmaceutical companies spend the most on R&D so we don't want that cut.

Seriously been following the debate and sometimes I'm ashamed people can bring down the debate like it's going down every day. I know stereotypes aren't correct most of the time but seriously, the way the republicans are fighting this ( the manner, the reasons, the reactions, the tactics) and the way almost 50% us the US population is believing it has me seriously doubting intellect on the other side of the atlantic.

debates like these are just, impossible in Europe, sorry. The ignorance from the politicians side, media and it seams a large portion of the population is just staggering.

Correction if you don't buy the plan you will be fined $1900 and then if you don't pay that fine you get a $25,000 fine or jail time.

I like the democrate that got up and said that not having health insurance is like the holocaust. Six million Jews killed, millions more placed in camps and nearly killed. Yes I can see how not having health insurance is like that

The debate is over health insurance not healthcare. In the US if you don't have health insurance and you get into a car accident or have a heart attack and are taken to the hospital you are not left in the parking lot you are taken care of. We don't have dead bodies pilled up outside hospitals (except in Detroit, but that is a different story).
