My sushi making lesson

I tag along with my friend to this sushi making class a week ago. I thought it would be easy, how hard can it be ? You just roll the rice into a cylinder, but as always it turns out to be pretty dam bloody hard.

Here are 2 photos of my monster sushi, I call it Spewshi. It was painful to look at but actually not that painful to eat.

I put way too much rice and other indegrients in it, so it was a struggle to roll everything up.

Haha, that's a beautiful tuna-crab-cucumber-corn roll!

I have done couple of rolls myself but they never were that pretty either. I have found these instructions quite useful:

Makizushi*-*Eat-Japan

Re: My sushi making lesson

I have never tried aswell, the idea of eating raw fish is just disgusting for me, but they always look delecious as does yours monster, one thing that has always struck my attention is that the sushi in accidental world is seen as rather a cheap meal, but i know some jap folks and they told me that in japan it was a luxurious meal.

It's a common misconception that sushi is all about raw fish but actually there are so many different types of sushi that the only thing they have in common is vinegared rice.

In Japan there are both cheaper so called conveyor belt sushi restaurants (kind of "fast food sushi") and more expensive traditional sushi restaurants. At the top end the chef is a professional sushi chef having gone through years of training and they only use the finest ingredients.

Anyway, sushi has become a universal dish. It's not the food just for the rich and the trendy people anymore. It has evolved with many local variations and the ingredients can be found in most grocery stores nowadays.

Most of the fish isn't actually raw, it's smoked

Re: My sushi making lesson

Hey Monster! congrats on your first sushi

Yes it's true that sushi is mainly associated with fish and rice, but it can be made with a variety of ingredients in many styles

The most famous by us westerners is the norimaki

After seeing Monster's try and the amount of filling, it's very tricky to roll the ingredients tight in one shot either with ot without the seeweed

I think you would have been better off trying a temaki style

The raw fish part is actually sashimi and it has no rice. It's customary to dip in soy and use wasabi.
They do serve on top of rice but it's called nigiri zushi
