Maarten Baas presented this exhibition "Where There's Smoke" in 2004. Much like Mendini's 're-design' furniture, Baas changes iconic design objects. Whereas Mendini transformed objects with pattern and colour, Baas uses a torch, keeping the objects recognizable but drastically different at the same time. ![]() ![]() 'Carlton' room divider created by Ettore Sottsass in 1981 as part of the Memphis Milano collection. ![]() ![]() Gerrit Rietveld Red/Blue chair (originally designed in 1918) ![]() Classic mid-20th century design objects 're-interpreted'. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Villa Amista Very interesting redesigns of old icons. I love when praised artistic pieces are reinterpreted. My concern is the usability of Bass furniture. The look like metal sculpures intended to be exhibited in musems only, they can't be bought right? I love his interpretation of the Recamier chair. It's really strkingly gorgeous. ![]() Looking at the names of most of the artists you have mentioned, most of them seem to be Italian? How come, aren't the French engadged in contemporary art? |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Villa Amista Italy is still the design capital of the world -- mostly because Italian manufacturers seem to be so much more design-conscious and open-minded than just about any where else. Italian manufacturers are the real heroes of the Italian design industry. Designers from all over the world create objects for Italian manufacturers. There are some very important French designers/architects like Philippe Stark, Jean Nouvel, Jean-Marie Massaud, Christian Ghion, Patrick Norguet, and the Bouroullec brothers. This is work by the French brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Patrick Norguet: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Dutch design has become very influential over the past decade. It is often quite intellectual and experimental. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Villa Amista During the 17th and 18th century Paris was with it's paiting academy and the salonge the art capital of the world but like you wrote Italy seem to be the leader in design. Many of the items posted here have been designed by Italians, Ferrari, Lamborhini, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Dolce&Gabbana, Gucci and Valentino are all exemples of Italian domination. Out of the artist you mentioned I'm familiar with Karim Rashid. I even have a magazine with pictures of his house and the whole interior. I like this "poor mans" chandelier. It is really cool and creative. I'll probably attempt to create a smilar one. ![]() BTW are most of the designs of these furnitures protected by laws or are we free to rip them off? |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Villa Amista I guess as long as you do not intend to try and sell a copied design ...you would be okay ...but otherwise they are protected by copyright. Actually, it is an interesting subject in its own right, many original Italian designs are copied by other manufacturers ...including other Italian ones. For example, this bar stool made by Magis has been extremely commercially successful ..but there are many copies around now. ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Villa Amista ^^ Yeah I have seen very similar designed bar stools several times. I would be crushed if created something ground breaking and large manufactuere ripped it off and sold copies ten times cheaper. |

I am particularly fond of this 'Chest of drawers' -- which I have already posted ...but I like it.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Another designer I really like is the German Ingo Maurer. His company called 'Ingo Maurer' make some of the most beautiful and unusual lights I have ever seen -- he is very respected. ..they are produced in small numbers and are more like artworks than production-line lighting products ...His lights have a spontaneity and freshness about them, some look like experimental prototypes which I really like; they have a very different character to the lights made by the big Italian manufacturers. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Check out his website, his objects are truly inspired. www.ingo-maurer.com | ||
