100 Million iPods sold

From Apple.com:

100 Million iPods Sold

CUPERTINO, California—April 9, 2007—Apple® today announced that the 100 millionth iPod® has been sold, making the iPod the fastest selling music player in history. The first iPod was sold five and a half years ago, in November 2001, and since then Apple has introduced more than 10 new iPod models, including five generations of iPod, two generations of iPod mini, two generations of iPod nano and two generations of iPod shuffle. Along with iTunes® and the iTunes online music store, the iPod has transformed how tens of millions of music lovers acquire, manage and listen to their music.
“At this historic milestone, we want to thank music lovers everywhere for making iPod such an incredible success,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPod has helped millions of people around the world rekindle their passion for music, and we’re thrilled to be a part of that.”
“It’s hard to remember what I did before the iPod,” said Mary J. Blige, GRAMMY Award-winning singer. “iPod is more than just a music player, it’s an extension of your personality and a great way to take your favorite music with you everywhere you go.”
“Without the iPod, the digital music age would have been defined by files and folders instead of songs and albums,” said John Mayer, GRAMMY Award-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist. “Though the medium of music has changed, the iPod experience has kept the spirit of what it means to be a music lover alive."
The iPod has also sparked an unprecedented ecosystem of over 4,000 accessories made specifically for the iPod that range from fashionable cases to speaker systems, and more than 70 percent of 2007-model US automobiles currently offer iPod connectivity.
“I take my running shoes and my iPod with me everywhere,” said Lance Armstrong, seven-time Tour de France champion. “I listen to music when I run. Having my music with me is really motivating.”
Every iPod features seamless integration with iTunes 7. The iTunes Store features the world’s largest catalog with over five million songs, 350 television shows and over 400 movies. The iTunes Store has sold over 2.5 billion songs, 50 million TV shows and over 1.3 million movies, making it the world’s most popular online music, TV and movie store.
Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital media revolution with its iPod portable music and video players and iTunes online store, and will enter the mobile phone market this year with its revolutionary iPhone.

Re: 100 Million iPods sold

Anybody remember last year's thread where we discussed... er, argued about, Microsoft Zune?

http://www.germancarforum.com/compute...od-killer.html

Anybody remember Zune? Show of hands?

Anyways, Gene and I locked horns like two retards in a playpen. It's a pretty funny (or maybe sad) thread rife with some fantastically overwrought discussion.

Re: 100 Million iPods sold

yeah, what happened to the Zune? Is it launched yet? in europe? it's so quiet

btw, does apple count all the replacement Ipods, after problems? because If so, I have had 5 Ipods, 3 mini, 2 video's, in the last 3 years or so and it would kinda take the shine away

It launched huge. It flopped huge. It will live out the remainder of its life as a marketing neutron star until it finally just fizzles out of existance.

Damn...Apple have sold 100million ipods and I haven't even bought 1 mp3 player yet...LOL

I've been thinking about buying one soon but right now I'm torn between the Ipod, Creative Zen VisionM and the Zune (in no particular order). I've been reading the good and bad things about all three but can't decide.

Re: 100 Million iPods sold

The hard drive in my ipod photo is fugged up and this is the second time it has happen. Last time I sent time to apple and the same thing has happened to the new one. I can only play some songs and I can
t sync it with my PC. So I can't save all my 4000 songs. I'm done with hard drives in MP3 players. The net ipod will probably have a 32 och 64B solid state disk hard drive inside it. Apple are always first with the latest hard drives and the SSD drives were presented two months ago so it's just a matteer or time.

Re: 100 Million iPods sold

My two cents Naruto - get something cheap.

I've bought two iPods: the first generation iPod Shuffle and the first generation iPod Nano. Both didn't cost me much, and I've loved both of 'em to death. Don't think I'll ever go for a full-blown iPod or mp3 player because the cost/enjoyment gap is just too steep.

Unless you have a huge music library that you simply must have on you at all times, a low capacity player will do just fine. I suggest the 2Gb iPod nano.

Re: 100 Million iPods sold

^^Thanks for the info guys. I might just wait and see if some new mp3 player might come out with that SSD drive.

As for buying something cheap, yep you're pretty right. I don't need to have a full fledged 30gb in my pocket all the time, thus the reason I haven't bought a mp3 player yet. The only reason I kind of want to get the hard drive based mp3 player because that way I can also load files on it if I have to transfer some documents really quickly.

Sometimes I go to friends/cousins house and we go parties and take lots of pics and videos but when we come back it's kind of a pain to be burning a whole cd for like 120pics or something when I could just transfer them into a portable drive that allows me to listen to music. The creative and ipod have capabilites to do that but its the extra features that are making me crazy...LOL Any suggestions?

These days there is a whole sea with different type of MP3 players. Ranging from tiny ones without a screen to Nano looking mp3 players which can even play videos. You need to decide what you want. Do you want video playback, do you want it to be really tiny, do you want a colour screen, do you want a built in USB contact? Great amount of variety there. I'm an MP3 pioneer BTW

Any flash-based iPod or MP3 player will enable you to use extra space as a hard drive.

Personally, I use my iPod nano as a file dump when I'm in a pinch. Usually I don't keep it filled with music, so having an extra 500mb or so of free space is no problem.
