Any classical music fan? Come discuss here!

I am a big fan of classical music.
My favourites are the pre-romantical and romantical componists.

I especially love the chamber music of Schubert or Beethoven.

I also love Mendelssohn (its Violin Concerto is just one of the most beautiful music ever created), Grieg (Piano Concerto, Peer Gynt), Mozart, Bach (Glenn Gould...), Gade (Octuor Violin), Bruch (Violin Concerto), Liszt, Chopin, and so many others....

Prokofiev is also one of my favourite, like Rob...

I also am fan of some operas, like Lucia di Lammermoor of Donizetti, Traviata or Rigoletto of Verdi, Carmen of Bizet, Faust of Gounod, Don Giovanni or die Zauberflöte (magic flute) of Mozart, Lakme of Delibes...

My absolute favourites, at the moment:

Schubert:

-Lieder, by Dietrich Fisher-Dieskau. Especially the 3 cycles Winterreise, the Schwanengesang, and die Schöne Müllerin

-Trio n°2

-Arpeggionne Sonata

Beethoven:

-Piano Sonata. Especially the Mondschein (Moonlight), Appassionata, Sturm, Waldstein, n° 16, n°11...
Played by Aldo Ciccolini or Wilhelm Kempff.

-The Piano and Violin Sonatas, especially of course the Kreutzer. My favourite version is David Oistrakh and Lev Oborin

-Piano Concerto n°5 Emperor.

Mendelssohn

-Violin Concerto

-Violin Octuor

And many more, like I said.
It also changes with my mood...there are so many wonderful musics...

But these that I quoted are always in my head and in my heart...

Some music that I really love.

British composer Ralph Vaughn Williams "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis" Vaughn Williams wrote some of the most beautiful music I know ....he is so underrated.

Belgian composer César Franck "Symphony in D minor" and "Piano Quintet in F minor". César Franck is one of my absolute favourites ....his music is in my mind quite often.

Italian composer Ottorino Respighi "Chaconne for violin, organ and strings"

Austrian composer Alban Berg "Dem Andenken eins Engels" I love the music of Berg ...and this piece is a favourite.

French composer Maurice Ravel "Piano Concerto for the left hand" .....this music could be an anthem for Paris ...I love it!

American composer George Gershwin "Porgy and Bess" (Opera) and "Rhapsody in Blue" .....I love Gershwin so much, his music captures the American spirit ....the energy and passion of his country ....I think he was one of the truly greatest geniuses of music .....so extraordinarily original and brilliant.

Contemporary Estonian composer Arvo Pärt "Fratres" there are many variations of this important music ....it is one of THE important compositions of the late 20th century.

Russian composer Alfred Schnittke "Concerto Grosso No. 2" Schnikke is an extremely important composer of the late 20th century, he died in 1998. His music is difficult to appreciate at first ...it is very complex, turbulent and chaotic ....almost schizophrenic and manic. Often he makes "musical quotes" of other composers works in in compositions ....but they are deconstructed and dematerialize before us. His music is not always pretty but is worth giving a chance, it is important art of our time. I guess we could say Schnittke is the Joseph Beuys of the music world. I find some of his compositions very moving and disturbing at the same time.

I have so much favourite music by many different composers .........I love so many differnt types of music too ...not just classical.

Olivier Messiaen: Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps (Quartet for the End of Time)

I really love the mysterious music of Olivier Messiaen. He wrote this Quartet in 1940 while he was surviving in a Nazi prison camp. The music is strangely serene.

Re: Any classical music fan? Come discuss here!

Classical music has every musical element that I love, especially the romantic and barockan era.
Hall Of The Mountian King by Grieg is good and also Carmina Burana by Carl Orff.
Unfourtunatly I don't know squat about classical music so it's not easy to find pieces that I like.

Re: Any classical music fan? Come discuss here!

Yeah I like Grieg ...great Norwegian composer.

The great Swedish composer is Wilhelm Peterson-Berger -- he wrote some very beautiful music ....I have a couple of CDs of his music.

It does not matter if you don't know much about classical music ...if you like it and it gives you a powerful feeling (happy, sad, even aggressive in some cases) then just enjoy it. There is too much pretense surrounding classical music in particular, but also music in general. I listen to so many different types of music. Right now I am listening to some alternative radio station playing something from Boards of Canada.

Yes I enjoy classical music a lot

Love opera and am a Puccini fan.

My favorites are La Boheme, Madama Butterfly, Tosca and Turandot. Who does not recognize the Nessun Dorma aria?

Another opera I particularly enjoy Mozart's Don Gionanni ( the catalog Cantata) where Leporello goes for it and spills the beans..

Madamina, il catalogue e questo....
