As of 13 August 2008, the MD-80 series had been involved in 56 incidents, including 23 hull-loss accidents, with 1,023 fatalities.

So as of today 57 incidents, 24 hull-loss with around 1,170 fatalities.

The MD 80 does not appear to be the safest plane and not very fuel efficient, I don't think it will last too much longer with the main airlines. 787 will be a great replacement.

Wow 1170 fatalities, and still going, huh? What does it take to determin that this aircraft is unsafe for cryin out loud!

Re: Serious airplane accident in Spain

I want to express my deepest condolences for the families and friends of the people that were in the accident.

Because it's still unknown what exactly caused the accident, it's pointless to blame anyone at this point.

Erm... let's put things into perspective here...

Boeing 737:
"As of 2008, a total of 284 incidents involving 737s had occurred, including 136 hull-loss accidents resulting in a total of 3,674 fatalities."
(Granted, there are five times as many 737's as there are MD-80's.)

Boeing 747:
"As of July 2008, a total of 47 hull-loss accidents involving 747s had occurred, and these had caused 3,707 fatalities."
(The number built is approximately one third more than MD-80's.)

Judging by these numbers, I'd say the MD-80 is just as safe as these two. What makes the difference between a safe plane and an unsafe one is the condition of the plane in question and the professionalism of the pilots. Of course, sometimes things just go wrong...

The air time and distance traveled by the Boeing's would be exponential compared to the MD-80. The Boeing jets are world wide cruisers whereas the MD-80 tends to form the backbone of interstate flights etc. When you compare fatalities vs. distance traveled the Boeing's show a much greater safety value.

The 737 is a short to medium range airliner, just like the MD-80.

Re: Serious airplane accident in Spain

In just one week.
MD82 crash in Spain 153 killed
Kit plane crashed in North Las Vegas killing the pilot (only one onboard) and two in the house it hit. (Less then six miles from my house)
Small plane crashed in Southern Utah killing all ten on board
737 crashed in Kyrgyzstan killing 68.

Several government officials said the plane belonged to Itek Air, a Kyrgyz company, but was operated by Iran Aseman Airlines. But Mamytov, the presidential adviser, said the plane was both owned and operated by Itek Air.

Itek Air has been banned from operating in the airspace of the European Union because of failure to meet safety and aviation standards, according to a list published by the EU July 24.

Re: Serious airplane accident in Spain

Holy crap! Second time in under a week, that less then five and a half miles from my house a plane crashed into a house.
Have not heard anything about if there was anyone at home at the time, but there was only one person in the plane. Piper Navajo.
Yes North Las Vegas airport has one of the worst, or the worst safety records in the US.

News just talked to the guy who was suppose to fly that plane to California today, he must be freaked.

My mom just told me another Spanair MD80 had problems yesterday and had to make an emergency landing just after taking off
