Yeah, I thought I won't bring that up because this thread is depressing as it is right now.

Re: Mumbai Terrorist Attacks

I have to say this is a cowardly attack on innocent people. Unfortunately the terrorists were able to execute their attack on multiple locations.

Even if the terrorists' intension wasn't to attack India, there is a big risk that this will entighten the tensions between India and Pakistan as India's Interior Minister says at least one of the arrested terrorists is from Pakistan.

May the victims rest in peace.

It is a very sad situation. People lost their lives just so that people are now getting angry and willing to go after more innocent lives - the only difference being the area being to the northwest of Mumbai.

I would love to say that people are sane and rational but from constantly staying in touch with people back home I am getting news that Mumbaikars (Mumbai residents) are calling for retaliation against not just terrorists but against Pakistan. This was clearly not helped by the Prime Ministers statements about "across the border" militants. Mind you, this is against Pakistan and not Muslims or Islam.

I am still hopeful that the rational will prevail but with such mind numbing politicians and a mob mentality general public just makes it that much more difficult.

On a ranting note: I am quite pissed off with a lot of the developments going on. I have been following the international (CNN) and local news coverage (CNN IBN, NDTV) through the internet and find it absolutely ghastly what is being reported and how it is being done.
Starting with CNN, I am happy that they are covering it 24x7 but that is where the good news ends. I get that CNN being US based needs to be reporting on US casualties and hostages but to blatantly say that now the game has changed because they targeted US and British citizens? It sounds condescending to all the Indians who lost their lives either being just bystanders or fighting the terrorists. To me it sounds that it is only important news because they targeted US citizens.
As for local news, what can I say. Either the government is just horrible or the media needs to go to (or back to) journalism school. Is money really that important that you give out live video and audio feeds from outside showing the commandos entering the premises through which wing on which floor and what ammo being used? At one point a channel had caught someone waving a handkerchief in a window and the anchor in the studio actually asked to figure out and REPEAT which floor it was on. Do you really want to give out the location of whoever they were to everybody involved. The only justification given was that it was delayed (is ~5 minutes really a delay) and that the cable had been shut. Is the media so dense that they can't wrap their heads around blackberries, internet, satellite phones, backup power?

On a more personal note- I really am thankful nobody I know was involved in these situations. My brother was on his way to the Taj when all this went down. Luckily news reached on time. He was just 15 minutes away. My uncle who visits the Taj or Oberoi for dinner almost every second night had guests over for dinner at home. This has been really sad for me because when I am back home, the Taj or Oberoi are virtually dinner hangouts for me and I would know atleast 5 different people who would end up there just for coffee or for dinner.
I am hearing horrifying stories from my families friends and friends of friends which really angers, saddens, and shocks me. It is very painful to see my city and country, once a helm of cosmopolitan life, becoming a "war zone".

Oh yes, they definitely targeted Westerners ....but the fallout will mostly affect the Hindu/Muslim relationship.
