Re: What do YOU think the term "African American" means

I think just 'black' is currently the preferred term.

The term 'Negro' has become almost unacceptable even though technically Negro or Negroid is the equivalent of Caucasian (white) or Mongoloid (Asian).

Mixed race people, I guess, can sometimes feel like they don't have a 'racial identity' ...but perhaps far too much emphasis is placed on racial identity -- mixed race families are so common now, what can be done to get beyond all this.

You didn't say what you feel your own racial identity is Deutsch ...I know you are American but that is not your race unless you are Native American Indian.

Yeah, that is true ...look at Halle Berry

African Americans are descended from a great gene pool -- only the fittest and strongest black men and women were taken for slavery (and survived the inhuman conditions on the ships). I guess this is partly why so many African Americans have such outstanding athletic ability -- I know I'm generalizing.

Rob is correct that they prefer to be known as just 'blacks'. i had few Nigerian friends back in college, and being called a black wasn't a problem with them.

but the term 'nigger' and 'negro' is a really rude word, and very offensive. avoid using or calling someone that at all times.

Re: What do YOU think the term "African American" means

I have many friends who happen to have a lot more melanin in their skin that what I do,
so they look fabulous in pale pastels and cream year long!

So how do I describe them ? Same way they describe themselves.
Let's suppose there is and application where you would have to fill in your personal info ,
if there is a box that says black, then that's the one, if there is a box that says African American, then that's the one.

I've asked , and it does not make a difference. Race hardly comes up as a topic.
In my place of employment we celebrate Black-History month, and have a pot-luck luncheon in which each person brings a traditional family dish.
I tease that I will bring "white bread and mayo" or crackers; but wind up bringing some pasta dish ( by popular demand)
