General Photo Competition #146...





Rules:

• The submitted picture must have been taken by the submitter.
• Only one photograph per person and per week is permitted.
• The submitted photograph may not be changed once it has been entered.
• There are 5 days to submit your photograph, a poll will be created after five days for people to vote on. (Voting from Friday morning to Monday morning, then a new thread will be created Monday morning for entry)
• Your image must be a resolution of 1024*768 or lower. If it is not, your picture will not be in the voting thread.
• In the interest of fairness, entrants may not vote for their own photograph.
• The photograph should be submitted with: A Title, the date, and the type of camera.
• Photoshop and other image editing softwares: Levels, Curves, Colour Balance, Brightness/Contrast, Hue/Saturation, cropping, or anything else possible in the development process or with filters and common special lenses is permitted . Other adjustments and effects (Color Selective - pending) are not permitted

Maybe we should proceed these "General Photo Comps" only every two weeks or so now…the traffic on thebyte just reduced again - and before we just have photo comps with two or three photos maybe we should just stop them for two or three weeks…

How did you get the camera to stay soo still whilst the shutter speed was set that low?

Shutter speed was at about 1/60 secs, and of course the approach to landing is never silk-smooth, so I had to firstly lock my arms as stiff as possible, and then the real key to keeping the focus on the wing and wingtip while the lights flashed by was pressing the camera up against the window of the aircraft. It literally is the only way you can avoid motion blur, because it's impossible to keep your hands so steady.

Here's another photo from the same flight, this time with a faster shutter speed. Unfortunately I don't have an expensive f2.8 lens, so to try and increase shutter speed without jacking up the ISO too much I had to sacrific aperture, so only the wing was in focus, was the beautiful LA city lights were completely out of focus. A bit annoying, but then again, you don't exactly get a lot of practice time when on final approach to landing. I'll be going on a quick trip up to Seattle in a week, so I'll be busy taking more and more aviation photos.
