![]() Yes, we have, but the difference is that you have days to prepare for a hurricane, and only minutes for a tornado We also have tornados in Florida, but not like in Jeff's neck of the woods We evacuated for hurricane Andrew, way back, we were 2 blocks from the Atlantic Ocean ( other side of Florida). We we came home , it was total devastation. in 2004 we braced for the fury of hurricane Charley, a powerful Cat 4 storm, we were living at an apartment while our house was finished. If it would have hit Tampa as projected, were would have been gone with the wind But it hit 200 miles south, so it was ok for us, terrible for Naples. A month later, hurricane Frances passes over Tampa, still in the apartment I went outside for 2 minutes to see the starry sky through the eye of the storm. it was unreal...! Then Hurricane Jeanne passes over Tampa, we are already in our new house. But our house is of the new generation, and is built to withstand Cat-3 hurricane winds. We saw the trees go sideways, things flew, we lost power, but we were safe for the first time | |

![]() | This occurred before people were all that interested in trying to measure the size of tornados. But on June 6th, 1980, Grand Island was hit by an unknown number for tornados (five to seven they say). The one that sat down in the SE section of the City appears to have been 3.5 miles in diameter. I watched it come in from the North and it looked like a wall coming in over downtown Grand Island. Trying to figure out what it was I saw, in spare moments my wife and I later started surveying the damage footprint (I worked for the city then so my employer wanted most of my time). I made a map on a large poster board. This is what told the 3.5 mile story. I wish I still had that map but it got tossed. So, Hallam, I think we've got you beat. |
